Gina Awad's new book "United" explores aspects of life as a family carer/supporter for a person with dementia
"United" is Gina Awad's new book, published on 2 June 2022, which explores themes around caring for a loved one with dementia. [...]It is a short read, offering a selection of resources, together with a variety of stories bringing to life a range of situations encountered by carers/supporters. [...]The book, illustrated by British Cartoonist Tony Husband, has met with high praise in the dementia field, with glowing reviews from patient advocates, carers, and dementia professionals, including Kate Lee, Chief Executive Officer, Alzheimer's Society, who commented: "What a compelling read, so skilfully written and with a deep understanding of the condition. The insight and 'tips' were invaluable and many chimed with me as challenges (and opportunities!) I faced with my own mum. An excellent piece of work." English actor, author, broadcaster, comedian, presenter and political activist Sir Tony Robinson, called it "a beautiful and moving book that vividly brings home the challenges faced by those with dementia and their carers".

Respite , we're not alone. A lite touch snapshot of our shared dilemmas.

An illustrative window, shared snapshots and gentle advice on the illogical world of caring for and coping for our dearest family members and their legacy .
United is not a manual or handbook ( there are a myriad other options available ) more a gentle team " hug " .... you are not alone .
Each persons journey is individualised yet we see from these collective observations a deeper wisdom learnt from the shared mutual experiences of others.
United made me recognise, reflect and then double down on my efforts to be more mindful of my 93 years old Father's diagnosis.
Most of all United made me SMILE : a tough call when trying to understand the emotional complexity of seeing loved one's suffer and the hopelessness and despair which can manifest .
United .... great advice and reassurance to motivate yourself to keep on keeping on !
Thank you Gina and Tony and all contributors

Opening the Dialogue on Dementia
5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Canada on 6 February 2025
Dementia is a serious topic, and individuals or families may not feel drawn to learn about it until they are personally affected - as the subject can be both daunting and intimidating.
Gina Awad and Tony Husband have found an inviting and engaging approach to bring important information about dementia to the reader, grabbing their attention by combining illustrations with the text – and it’s a quick read. They highlight stories which touch on the realities (and mysteries) of dementia while teaching there's a better way to respond to dementia.
“United: Caring for our loved ones living with dementia” opens the dialogue on dementia and aims to reduce its stigma. It is a valuable resource for families, caregivers, and individuals living with dementia.
